Professional Development Day

Friday March 1, 2013


The Goal: Is to create a collaborative environment at CPU. The intent of the day is to share knowledge and best practices. This will be an interactive and predominately a sharing session to help build a collaborative environment at CPU.


Time:            8:30 am – 4:30 pm

Location:        5th floor collaborative room & Mac Lab

Snacks:          coffee/tea/water and some morning snacks

Lunch:            provided at Peppercorn café (thanks Jim Leonard for treating us!)

What to bring:   1. A fully charged laptop (not IPAD). *Extra extension cords and power bars have been     requested.

   2. A student/teacher sample of a “blended learning assignment”

How it will run:   Most workshops will be full faculty sessions conducted by various staff members, who       graciously volunteered. (thanks to all who volunteered!)


*Could each HOD please ask someone from your department to bring a sample or simply talk about how they are organizing their Blended Learning days.  It will be good to share ideas.  *This will only work if people are ready to share.


**There will be one break out session in the afternoon, for the Mac Lab workshop. There are only 17 computers available, therefore; the staff will be split into two groups: (1) English/Social Sciences and (2) Math/Science.


Group (1) English/Social will be in the Mac Lab and Group (2) Math/Science will be in departmental meetings in the Collaborative room on 5th floor on how to best incorporate what has been learned through-out the day, in their courses or departments.  Student teachers will share their latest resources in the Department sessions.


The sessions will then switch. We will close the day on the 5th floor.

Comparison Between Accommodations & Modifications

We Accommodate the teaching/learning process to meet student needs and allow demonstration of grade

level expectations which are age/grade appropriate; changes are made to the way the student is taught

and assessed. Accommodations set up “equity” so all students can play on a level playing field.

We Modify the curriculum to meet student needs that are substantially different from the prescribed

grade level curriculum.

Neil's Notice to the Ontario Inspector 

I hope you find all the information you are looking for in the folder of papers, on my class website, and in the files in the “course materials” and “unit 1” and “unit 2” folders in the laptop desktop folder I have prepared for you.

                             a . My attendance records are open – please check the TCIS window (black stylized T with red).

                             b.      I use the backwards design (Understanding by Design, Wiggins and McTighe) method of curriculum unit design.

    c.     Please find in my unit 1 and unit 2 folders the respective unit plans and some assessment tools.

·   The plans for the learning activities identified in the unit plans can be found on our class website at sorted by date.


                                           c.  Please find in the folder of papers evidence of:

   1.      Assessment of learning:

                                 ·     marked tests and projects (investigation lab and application project) from unit 1 with scored rubrics showing evidence of assessment                     across the 4 categories

  2.       Assessment for learning:

·      Some copies of marked quizzes – the feedback was for coaching purposes only
