Professional Development Day

The Goal: Is to create a collaborative environment at CPU. The intent of the day is to share knowledge and best practices. This will be an interactive and predominately a sharing session to help build a collaborative environment at CPU.

 

Time:            8:30 am – 4:30 pm

Location:        5th floor collaborative room & Mac Lab

Snacks:          coffee/tea/water and some morning snacks

Lunch:            provided at Peppercorn café (thanks Jim Leonard for treating us!)

What to bring:   1. A fully charged laptop and IPAD.

                       2. Please bring your own headset for the MacLab Session  

                     *Extra extension cords and power bars have been requested.

  

How it will run:   Most workshops will be full faculty sessions conducted by various staff members, who       graciously volunteered. (Thanks to all who volunteered!)

 

**There will be one break out session in the afternoon, for the Mac Lab workshop. There are only 17 computers available, therefore; the staff will be split into two groups: (1) English/Social Sciences and (2) Math/Science.

Google Docs used for the following classroom  

Google Drive for IPad 

Using Google Docs for educational purposes- Since 2008- in Singapore the MYP schools were using Google Docs to develop curriculum expectations and teaching resources. MYP, at my school at the time,  had no textbook and very little professional resources.  Schools used Google Docs to plan and organize assignments, assessments and also teacher resources. In Singapore each department had close to 10 teachers. It is and was a useful tool.  


Since then: 

1. Google Docs- "Presentation  Function'- students can share documents and I can keep track of their progress in real time. 

2. Google Docs- "Form"- to create the message the "Professional Learning Community"-  For example it is an easy anonymous way to ask teachers what they want and if they are willing to share.  This application feature can be used instead of Survey Monkey.  

3. Google Calendar Feature -Used to create a shared calendar- For example the calendar eileen created: See here: CPU Calendar . At my other schools there was a daily bulletin with events and planning.  At this location, where we don't get to control our own website it is a free useful and editable tool for school environments. 

4. Google Doc- " Spreadsheet"- used to calculate the totals of lunch orders. After a class or staff list is posted. Teachers choose their own orders. 

if you use the "sum (B3: B43) it calculates all of the meals or choices for you.  


   Advantages

1. People can edit their own documents in real time.

2. You can view on mulitiple devices, iPad, Smart phones and laptops

3. Documents are in a recognizable format. For example, a Google Docs "Document" looks like a Microsoft Word document.

For example the Google Docs- Calendar for CPU used for teachers to post assignment dates and link can be pasted onto Moodle 

Google Scholar for Research-  in the university library database there was a link to this website to either find relevant research or to locate PDF documents on the Internet. 

After your search, Query to find a "PDF" version of the document that you want. 

Google Drive provides each user with 15 GB of space. After users reach this capacity they are required to pay. Another reason to have numerous accounts for different purposes. 
My school in Singpore- 15 GB 
My Masters degree- 15 GB 
My school in Malaysia- 15 GB 

 

Each user has 15 GB of Storage.

The 2 Questions from the Feedback form were: 

1. What did you like about the PD session? 

2. What would you like to see extensions on for the next PD session?  

InformativeI would like a longer session on Google Docs. Maybe a breakout sessions dealing with the various aspect of Google Docs.
Knowledge from Cara's session on the power to empower and Neil's on formative assessment. Sultan's session was also great as it had a hands-on experience. 1. The power to empower.
